1/60 VF-1A Miria Fallyna Jenius Version (Unofficial)

1/60 VF-1A Valkyrie Miria Jenius version

At the time that Miria Fallyna Jenius (Milia Jenius) defected to the side of the humans after falling in love with Max Jenius in the SDF Macross anime. I've often wondered whether she dove immediately to using the VF-1J (which was used by squad leaders) that she was seen using in the anime or whether she first flew a VF-1A, the mass produced Variable Fighter of the Earth Forces? If she did use a VF-1A I wondered also what color she would use?, most likely she would follow the color placement of Max's VF-1A but more suited to her red color scheme.

With that in mind I decide to make that a reality by putting to use the Yamato Toys 1/60 VF-1A No Paint Kit model kit with bonus parts using the color placement of the VF-1A of Max Jenius. The kit isn't entirely finished as I didn't bother to build the Gunpod and missiles yet as well as I forgot to add the clear plastic on the shoulders of the VF-1A in Battroid mode. For these pictures I used the Gunpod from my 1/60 VF-1A Mass Production. For the decals, I didn't bother to add all the decals as instructed in the manual as that would take forever!

I had fun with the build but I have to confess that it was a nerve wracking build for me. Aside from coming a year off of not building model kits, this kit is very difficult to build and not for the inexperienced modeler. Then there was the fear of not making such a huge mess of the build. I knew I was going to make a mess because of the reasons mentioned above and because I hold the Macross mecha with such reverence that it adds to the nervous tension. Call it weird really but I really feel that way for this very cherished childhood memory.

I'll post in the next couple of days the build diary of this model kit, something I didn't want to do in this post as it would make it a very long,long....long read.

Completed pictures can be seen in the succeeding pages.

Fighter Mode

In this first picture I actually forgot to add the head of the VF-1A in Fighter mode...hehehe

I always loved that Prometheus signage that indicated where the VF berthed, that's why I decided to add the decal. Aside from the Prometheus there are also alternate decals for ARMD and SDF-1. Not particularly proud of my masking skills during the painting of the leg parts, as you will notice the signs of paint seepage around the edges of the side of the legs.

Made a booboo by spraying clear lacquer spray on the canopy in order to seal the decals in, it ended up frosted...blehhh. The sticker with the name of Miria Fallyna Jenius came from the sticker set of the 1/60 VF-22S Sturmvogel II of Max

Gerwalk Mode

Only the red parts and some black parts of the fuselage are painted on because I wanted to minimize the chance of paint flaking off because it being rubbed against other components during the transformation procedure. A matte coat was added on top of the non-clear parts to seal the decals in.

Battroid Mode

This is my most favorite mode of all and this will be the final mode of this model kit when I place it on my display case. Can't risk the paint chipping off during transformation. Made me appreciate too how Yamato Toys had most of the parts molded in the appropriate color already for the ready built Macross toys they sell, helps a lot in preventing paint chipping. I have to say that this build had given me a deep respect for the engineering skills of the toy engineers at Yamato Toys as well as the building skills of the workers who assemble these toys as it really is bloody hard!
