Giant Robot Series

Shin Getter 2 on Sale!I’ve been seeing these Getter 2 toys on sale for the longest time at HLJ already. Months is more like it. And I’m definitely surprised that they are still on slashed/reduced prices. Must be an overstock or nobody is buying them… or worse, nobody knows that they are on sale! As a Getter fan, I just hate to see a good Getter sale passed up by other Getter fans.

First is the Shin Seiki Gohkin Shin Getter 2 that was initially priced at 12800 yen, but is now going for only 3,840 yen. Then there is the Shin Seiki Gohkin Shin Getter 2 limited edition Weathering version that is going for 5,120. There is also the Black Edition Shin Seiki Gohkin Shin Getter 2 that is going for 6400 yen.

I betray my age whenever I say that my legs get weak whenever I see these old Japanese commercials for toys and plastic model kits during the 80’s. I find it funny really because I never even lived in Japan when I was a kid. I have a feeling that watching the grainy video ellicits a feeling of nostalgia for us children of the eighties. Its the chance to see the world through 80’s eyes again I guess. Back then there were no HD’s or wide screen tv’s. 14″ was the norm for a tv screen and most often than not your television set was shared and the reception was in black and white. If you wanted to watch in color you had to hook up with your rich neighbor’s kid… and cable? what’s cable?…hehehe

Bless the soul of this guy who preserved and uploaded all these old commercials.

Anyway here’s an old Macross model kit commercial:

After reviewing Revoltech’s Getter 1 and Getter 3, I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that there is going to be a review of Getter 2 in this site.

Revoltech’s Getter 2 from Shin! Getter Robot Close UP

Getter Robo was created by Go Nagai in the 70’s during the Giant Robot manga craze that swept Japan. The Getter Robo franchise tells the story of a hidden dinosaur kingdom under the earth emerging to take over the world.

Revoltech's Getter 3 from Shin! Getter Robot

I wrote before in my review of Revoltech’s Getter 1 figure, that I had only a sparse memory of the Getter series as a child, but once I had reached a stage of maturity I had a chance to reconnect once more with Go Nagai’s Getter Franchise by means of the Starvenger series of Jim Terry, which “Americanized” Getter Robo G.

Revoltech OVA Getter 1 Figure

As a child of the 80’s I grew up watching Getter Robot. Of course I don’t remember a darn thing anymore about it, only a snippet of an episode. But the image of Go Nagai’s creation of planes merging to form 3 different Getter robots have never left my mind.

I remember having a very tall, cheap, hollow, bootleg, plastic toy of Getter 1 that I carried around with me all the time, even when I had to take a bath I remembered bringing it with me. Maybe it was tall because of my perspective as a child, so I’d assume that in reality it could have been somewhere around 8 ~ 12 inches in height.

Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s I got exposed to Japan’s greatest exports. Aside from the TV and cars, one of the best things that came out of Japan was their anime cartoons. One of the cartoons I loved to watch at that time was the Mekanda Robo(t) series. So of course I got excited when I saw a toy of it being sold here.
