Probably one of the best sites I like to visit, the Replica Prop Forum. Specifically the General Modeling and Studio Scale Modelling sub forums because that's where the sci-fi based model and scratch built projects are talked about.
If you are into scratch building your own model kits and figures then this is the best site for you. People in the forum are luminaries in the movie special effects department.
You'll have to sift through the forums but you'll find some gem tutorials on how to go about a scratch built project. You'll see the tools, techniques and materials used by the pro's.
